Why Choose an ANZSOPS Member?

Certified ANZSOPS members are specialist ophthalmologists who have additional training in eyelid, orbital (eye socket) and lacrimal (tear drainage) surgery.

ANZSOPS members have expertise in techniques that address both functional and aesthetic results for the eye.

Why is it important to have an ANZSOPS member perform surgery around the eyes?

ANZSOPS members are specialist ophthalmologists (eye doctors) who have additional training in eyelid, lacrimal and orbital surgery. ANZSOPS members are trained to do many different types of eyelid and facial surgery, ranging from eyelid malposition to more complex reconstruction involving the eyelids and surrounding forehead, temporal and cheek areas. They understand the delicate anatomy and function of the eyelids and their surrounding structures. As well as the eyelids, they perform surgery on the lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (bone cavity around the eye), adjacent periocular (around the eyes) and facial structures as well as the forehead and cheeks.

Internationally known as “oculoplastic surgery”, or “ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery”, this speciality field is known in Australia as oculo-facial surgery or eyelid, lacrimal and orbital surgery.

  • As specialist ophthalmologists, ANZSOPS members assess the surface health of the eyes and function of the eyelids prior to eyelid surgery
  • As dedicated eyelid surgeons, an ANZSOPS member routinely does surgeries in these areas, and recognises potential problems
  • ANZSOPS members are trained to manage the complications of eyelid and facial plastic surgery which can involve the eye itself
  • ANZSOPS members have a professional society which helps them maintain a high standard of care, called the Australian and New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons for which there are membership criteria.
